Portable Bluetooth speakers are among the most diverse product groups nowadays. They come in all shapes and sizes, materials, colors, and pack different features. But CMF makes possibly the most interesting of them all. Meet the CMF Speaker S, a compact Bluetooth speaker that’s just €69 and well worth it.

The CMF Speaker S ships in a simple box with no accessories included. As the name suggests, this is CMF’s small speaker — there’s also the €114 CMF Speaker M, which packs twice the power.

The Speaker S delivers 10W of sound through a 45mm driver with a 70Hz to 20kHz frequency range. It has two passive radiators on either side to simulate bass.

Design

CMF openly acknowledges that the Speaker S is inspired by a milk carton. The speaker is available in four colors — White, Red, Black, and Cyan — and each gets a custom rotating knob. The White and Red models feature a lever-style rotary knob, while the Black and Cyan models have an X-shaped and ring-shaped knob, respectively.

The CMF Speaker S has a modular design. Unclip the lock button on the back and you can swap the knob — or the entire front panel — between speakers. This is most useful if you own two or more speakers, as CMF does not sell the front cover or knob separately.

The knob is a highlight. Continuing CMF’s tradition of multi-function rotating controls, it handles volume by default. Press it once and it switches to playback control; press again and it manages track navigation. It’s the kind of versatility that makes the speaker feel fun and engaging to use.

Sound Quality

At 10W, the Speaker S has plenty of volume. Its soundstage is clear and midrange-focused, with solid vocal presence and a clear emphasis on instruments. However, bass is limited. That’s acceptable for listeners who aren’t bass-focused, but some low end is needed to make music feel alive and tactile, and there simply isn’t enough here. Enabling Ultra Bass mode doesn’t help much — it detracts from the overall sound quality rather than meaningfully improving the low end.

It’s worth noting that no compact speaker excels at bass reproduction — it’s not a realistic expectation for a device this size. On the plus side, the CMF Speaker S produces a bigger sound than its small form factor suggests, and its IP68 rating means full dust and immersion resistance, making it a capable companion outdoors.
