When will the Motorola Edge S be released?
The Moto Edge S was unveiled in China on 27 January, and is currently available to pre-order there ahead of a full release on 3 February.
As for the rest of the world, leaker Evan Blass reports that the Edge S will launch globally this year as the Moto G100 – fulfilling Motorola’s claim from last December that it would bring a Snapdragon 8-series chipset to the Moto G line some time in 2021.
How much does the Motorola Edge S/G100 cost?
In China the Moto Edge S starts at CNY¥1999 (£225/US$310) for the base variant that comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The 8GB+128GB version costs ¥2,399 (£270/$370), while the 8GB+256GB model costs ¥2,799 (£315/$430).
If and when the phone launches globally as the G100 it’s likely that we won’t see all three of those configurations, and it’s equally likely that prices will be a little higher than those conversions, making this one of the more expensive G phones we’ve seen yet – no great surprise, given the higher specs.
What are the Moto Edge S/G100 specs?
So, speaking of specs, what do we get with the Edge S?
First up, as already mentioned, the phone is powered by the Snapdragon 870, and is actually the first device to launch with the new chip. The 870 is really a Snapdragon 865++, offering yet another version of the 2020 flagship 865 with it’s prime core overclocked to 3.2GHz.
I mentioned storage and RAM above, but basically you can get either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB storage. The battery is 5000mAh, with 20W fast charging to top it up, and you also get an IP52 rating, a fingerprint sensor in the power button, and even a headphone jack.
The display is a large 6.7in FHD+ LCD panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, though curiously it’s flat rather than curved – which makes us wonder why it has the ‘Edge’ name at all in China, since it was the curved display in part that set aside the original Moto Edge from the rest of the company’s lineup.
You’ll also spot the dual-selfie camera setup on the phone’s front, with a 16Mp primary camera and an 8Mp ultrawide to complement it – a similar setup to last year’s Moto G 5G Plus.
On the back – available in ‘Emerald Ryuko’ and ‘Early Sunny’ colours, which look like blue and silver to my eyes – you’ll see a quad-camera array. The main camera is 64Mp, joined by a 16Mp wide-angle, 2Mp depth sensor, and a ToF sensor.
