It took a while but the classic Irem shoot-em-up Image Fight is now finally available on both the PlayStation 4 and Switch.

If you remember, I have been going on about Image Fight for a good few years now. Hoping that it would get a modern port to the Switch, along with games such as R-Type.

While we got R-Type Dimensions EX on the Switch recently, I had hoped Image Fight would follow suit at some point and as of today it finally has.

Part of the Arcade Archives collection, this is an arcade perfect port of the original game, and not a funky remaster in the same way as R-Type Dimensions EX.

This is an incredibly important point because Image Fight is a very difficult and technical game. Messing around with how it plays for a remaster would effectively ruin what makes Image Fight so special.

This is because Image Fight has some fiendish yet simple systems that require pin-point accuracy on the part of the player.

To explain, the OF-1 Daedalus you pilot can pick up pods. Blue pods fire straight ahead but red pods fire in the opposite direction of your movement. Coupled with that you can specify the speed at which you move.

Put simply; your movement dictates the direction you fire and controlling the speed of your movement is all about making sure you are very precise with your shots.

So when you get to the second stage in the game and you have to assault a flying carrier that is positioned alongside you, getting your relative position and movement correct is obviously somewhat critical.

Image Fight is also a very influential game, with people like Hiroshi Iuchi citing its importance in the creation of the similarly incredible Radiant Silvergun. Not to mention, the likes of Tomonobu Itagaki rating it is as one of his favorite games of all-time.

Anyway, the real highlight for Switch owners here is that as this is a vertical scrolling shoot-em-up, so you can flip the screen in portable mode to have it more authentic to the arcade original.

For me, one of my favorite arcade games is now available for a whole new generation of gamers to play and I think that is wonderful. Be warned though, Image Fight is a very challenging game and if you think the Souls series is the peak of gaming difficulty, then this classic Irem game from 1988 will definitely help you reappraise that limited viewpoint.

Image Fight is now available as part of the Arcade Archives range on both the PlayStation 4 and Switch in Japan. You can purchase the game easily enough on either Japanese online store and the game is also localized in English.
