Paranormal Files: The Trap of Truth – Review

Elephant Games is slowly, but surely building the Paranormal Files series to become another one of their flagship franchises. In this latest installment, follow the now-famous Rick Rogers as he is welcomed into a new social circle of paranormal friends. But his hopes for a stable period in his life comes crashing down when he learns the lies and the ugly secrets of his friends…

In more ways than one, the storyline in Paranormal Files: The Trap of Truth is quite great. The moral dilemma of truth versus lie is definitely interesting, the characters are distinctive, and the backstory is rich. The storyline is also smartly intertwined with the gameplay, so it is not plainly delivered via dialogues and cutscenes, but through gameplay elements as well.

Sure, for the most part, the gameplay here does not go much beyond the typical HOPA mold. However, there is also plenty to admire. The adventure part of the game might play it relatively safe, but the hidden object scenes and the puzzles offset that with an abundance of creative ideas and clever designs. They are not the most challenging puzzles, but are extremely fun to play.

From Mystery Trackers to Hidden Hotel, Elephant Games knows their way around stunning visuals. Unfortunately, that does not fully translate here. Although the artwork and the graphics quality are impressive, the cutscenes and the animations are clunky, unpolished, and distract from the immersive experience of the game.

That being said, Paranormal Files: The Trap of Truth is not at all a terrible game and it is still worth purchasing the Collector’s Edition, if you can get it at a discounted price. The bonus content includes a bonus chapter, a strategy guide, wallpapers, a screensaver, soundtracks, replayable hidden object scenes, replayable puzzles, achievements, collectibles, morphing objects, and a secret room.

Paranormal Files: The Trap of Truth’s production values might not be up to the studio’s usual high standards, but the game is entertaining in its own right.
