Sony has confirmed PlayStation 5 will not support expandable storage at launch.

In a statement sent to The Verge, the company stated expandable storage for PS5 will be possible in a future update.

This means the slot for expandable storage will be disabled until the update arrives.

The comment mirrors one made by PlayStation hardware architect Mark Cerny back in March, who stated the ability to expand the storage would likely happen “a bit past launch.”

“Please hold off on getting that M.2 drive until you hear from us,” Cerny said at the time, as not all will be fast enough, thin enough to fit, or compatible. So, it’s probably best to wait on Sony to tell us which SSDs are compatible with and supported by PS5.

The platform will support USB external storage at launch though.
