Developer and publisher Riot Game has filed a lawsuit against esports organisation Riot Squad more than trademark infringement.

That is according to Polygon, which reports that the League of Legends maker is taking the pro-games firm to court in California, claiming that Riot Squad has “unfairly and unlawfully” utilised the ‘Riot’ name – frequently devoid of ‘Squad’ – to piggyback off Riot Games’ achievement.

The business has mentioned it will be searching for compensation for harm completed and that the esports organisation should really not be permitted to use the ‘Riot’ name.

Riot Squad initially applied for the ‘Riot Squad’ and ‘RS” trademarks, as effectively as for that of its logo (pictured), with American IP authority USPTO on June 24th, 2019.

“By means of its conduct, Riot Squad has willfully produced situations whereby members of the public are most likely to be led to incorrectly think that the goods provided by Riot Squad are authorised by, sponsored by, or affiliated with Riot, its effectively-recognized marks, and the items supplied thereunder,” lawyers for the League of Legends maker mentioned in the lawsuit.

“The Court should really enjoin any additional use of the ‘Riot’ name by Riot Squad, and Riot should really be compensated for the harm completed to its brand as a outcome of Riot Squad’s conduct.”

Riot Squad does not operate a League of Legends group, but is involved with esports for titles such as Counter-Strike: Worldwide Offensive, Fortnite, Rainbow six Siege, Apex Legends, and Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds.
