Cloudy: Ten Years of Reigning Meatballs

In a uncommon reversal of expectations, the licensed game is not as superior as the film.

The film adaptation of Cloudy With a Likelihood of Meatballs is ten years old these days. Extra pertinently, the video game adaptation of the film adaptation of Cloudy With a Likelihood of Meatballs is also ten. Sadly, the video game is boring and staid exactly where the film is vibrant, funny and fascinating, so whilst this weblog is ostensibly about the game, it is basically secretly about the film. Do not inform Jeremy!

Taking (extremely) loose inspiration from the classic children’s image book, Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s (Into the Spider-verse, 21 Jump Street, Clone Higher) take on Cloudy With a Likelihood of Meatballs is a madcap, wildly inventive adventure detailing the rise, fall and rise of Flint Lockwood, scientific prodigy, inventor and son of a fisherman. Though the film purports to be about Flint’s newly-developed “FLDSMDFR” launching into the stratosphere and eventually causing giant meals to rain from the sky, it is basically about characters studying to be comfy in their personal skin and cease pretending to be an individual they’re not in order to impress other folks.

In a wonderful reversal of the Fairly in Pink “look-the-ugly-girl-was-secretly-gorgeous” trope, Flint offers up-and-coming weathergirl Sam Sparks a makeover by returning her huge, thick-lens glasses and applying a scrunchie to her hair. That he can outwardly embrace Sam’s truest self whilst refusing to appear inward and analyse his personal disingenuous therapy of his widowed father is reasonably thoughtful stuff for what’s proficiently a kids’ film.

Youngsters will not care, even though, for the reason that they’ll be also busy laughing at the nacho cheese hot spring, macaroni-on-the-head guy and world’s biggest sardine. Common of Lord and Miller the film drills by way of gags like some sort of comedy machine gun, but the a lot more emotional moments in the film are provided relative space to breathe. There’s often a huge laugh coming, but it does not cheapen the characterisation and in no way feels like the writers are ticking boxes.

Cloudy is cleverly plotted, hilariously written, spectacular to appear at and giddily inventive. The video game is a fundamental, semi-isometric collectathon with no stand-out mechanics and practically nothing to propose it. The game is what men and women appear to assume the film is. Do not play the game. Certainly watch the film.
