Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, August 19, to Sunday, August 25.

Monday Night Game Night

What: Gaming
When: Monday, August 19, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Level Up Games (South St. Paul)

While it may be tough diving back into the workweek (at least for those of us with Monday-to-Friday jobs), this event seeks to add fun and levity to Mondays with games. This is your chance to game with your fellows in a fun environment, either bringing your own or borrowing from the store’s library. Decompress and make some new meeple-friendly pals.

Twin Cities Monday Night Backgammon

What: Gaming
When: Monday, August 19, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Minneapolis Richfield American Legion

Enjoy a night of backgammon with two tournaments. Entry to this event is $5, and this is a great chance for both pros and newcomers to learn this classic game of strategy.

GPS Figure Drawing Salon

What: Arts, Educational
When: Monday, August 19, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Arts Initiative hosts a figure-drawing salon at the Waterbury Building on the third Monday of each month. For a $5 fee, attendees can participate in a three-hour drawing session that “will include short, medium, and long poses, which allow artists to engage with the subject in varying ways” and that “will use a combination of nude and costumed models to support and foster fantasy and science-fiction art.” The goal of hosting this event is to “cultivate a community of artists to share ideas, support each other, and create.”

Gallery Hop for Creative Night

What: Arts, Community
When: Monday, August 19, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Normally for this event, participants are asked to let their creativity shine with drawing, painting, crafting, or whatever their hearts desire at Creative Night, a weekly event put on by Crafty Geek and the Geek Partnership Society. However, this week the group will be stepping out for a gallery. Meet at the Waterbury Building at 6:30 and carpool or walk to see creativity in action. This is a free event, with limited space.

Surly Cinema: Raiders of the Lost Ark

What: Movies, Food & Drink
When: Monday, August 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Surly Brewing Co.

Surly Cinema will be lighting up Minneapolis nights with beer, food, and most importantly, free movies in the Beer Garden. Attendees are encouraged to bring a towel or lawn chair, and enjoy this summer’s theme of blockbusters. This week’s showing is Raiders of the Lost Ark, a great film for fans of Nazi-punching, breezy adventure, and face-melting.

Terror Tuesday: Maximum Overdrive

What: Movies
When: Tuesday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities

Terror Tuesday, a horror-screening series at the Alamo Drafthouse Twin Cities, seeks to liven up weeknights with blood-pumping terror. Tickets are $5, and as always, the Alamo Drafthouse has a variety of food and drink available to enjoy with the film. This week’s screening is Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive, a “beach read” of a King adaptation in which machines turn on us to deadly result. Tickets are $5.

When: Wednesday, August 21, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Cafe Meow (St. Paul)

The Twin Cities Elysium Society hosts a casual meetup on the third Wednesday of each month. This group is a “community and a resource for all manner of goth, not-goth, darksider, freak, punk, metal, steam, cyber, rivet, Victorian, romantic, grufti, espeluznante, emo, otaku, morbidly inclined, dark creative, what-have-you (you know who you are).”

Mystic Dawn/Amtgard

What: Gaming, Sports & Fitness
When: Wednesday, August 21, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Oak Grove Park

Amtgard, a global organization focused on the sport of medieval-fantasy combat, will be hosting a gathering in Oak Grove Park. Participants can take part in glorious quests, battle, and more, all with the use of foam weapons for the sake of safety. Garb is encouraged, but not required, and loaner weapons are available. This is a free-to-play event, but long-term players are expected to support the organization with $6 or $10 dues.

Trash Film Debauchery: Dark Star

What: Movies
When: Wednesday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Trylon Cinema

Long-running local cult-cinema group Trash Film Debauchery returns to the Trylon for John Carpenter’s Dark Star. Dark Star is a satire focused on a crew of astronauts tasked with the destruction of “rogue planets,” penned by Dan O’Bannon (of Alien fame). Fans of ’70s-style space adventure, John Carpenter, and Alien could learn a lot from this film. Tickets are $5.

Trivia Against Humanity Wednesdays

What: Trivia
When: Wednesday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Modist Brewing Co.

This regular event at Modist, hosted by Sam Spadino and Bacon, represents the convergence of two geeky favorites: a brewery that geeks out for innovative beer, and absurd trivia. Trivia Against Humanity has other weekly events as well; see the Trivia Against Humanity Facebook page for additional events.

When: Thursday, August 22, at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Cambria Gallery on 7th

Enjoy an evening of local brands, artists, and influencers for a night of music, charity, fashion, and networking. This event is put on by Brand Experience, and aims to create connections between entrepreneurs, small businesses, corporations, and more. So come on down, see and be seen, and forge connections with folks, if you dare!

Back to Hogwarts Yoga

What: Books, Sports & Fitness
When: Thursday, August 22, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Real Life Coffee and Yoga (St. Paul)

Fans of Harry Potter and yoga unite for this themed night. Get ready to mix potions, face mystical challenges, and more as all seven years of school at Hogwarts are celebrated. Bring a water bottle and clothes that you are comfortable moving in, and if you have a yoga mat, bring that as well.

Crafty Geek/Make It Sew

What: Arts, Meetup
When: Thursday, August 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Building and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!”

This Is Spinal Tap, with pre-movie music by Saint Small

What: Movies, Music
When: Thursday, August 22, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Parkway Theater

Turn it up to 11 with a night of music, followed by a screening of This Is Spinal Tap, the greatest heavy-metal band that never was (in close contention with “The Best Ever Death-Metal Band in Denton,” of Mountain Goats fame, or Dethklok). This event starts at 7:00, with preshow music provided by Saint Small, before moving on to the screening. If you haven’t seen Spinal Tap, and are a fan of mockumentary films, heavy metal, or druids, you should totally check it out. Presale tickets are $9, or $11 at the door.

2D Con

What: Gaming, Convention, Music
When: Friday, August 23, at 10:00 a.m.; until Sunday, August 25, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

Celebrate all things gaming with 2D Con, an inclusive and charitable gaming event held every summer to celebrate the gaming community at large. This convention features a wide variety of games, including tabletop role-playing games, trading-card games, speedrunning, cosplay, retro games, musical performances, industry events, and more. Standard preorder badges are currently $35, but there are a variety of other cost options. See the website for more details on registration and the schedule of events.

Friday Night Magic

What: Gaming
When: Friday, August 23, at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Mischief Toy Store

Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some magic with them this Friday night for this Magic: The Gathering draft event. Entry is $15, and all players will receive prizes, including a “fancy promo card.” This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Mischief Toy Store hosts other events throughout the week, which are listed on Meetup and Facebook (check out the full calendar on the event page linked above).

Tsuinishi Anime Club

What: Movies
When: Friday, August 23, at 8:30 p.m.
Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building

Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series.

Weekly Comics Chat

What: Meetup, Comics
When: Saturday, August 24, at 3:00 p.m.
Where: Kitty Cat Klub

The Girls Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join.

After Hours Stand Up Comedy Show

What: Comedy & Theater
When: Saturday, August 24, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Hot Comics and Collectibles (Richfield)

Are you an adult nerd? Then come on down and check out a great night of comedy, held at a long-time local-nerd hot spot (in a new location). There’s a $5 cover at the door, and comics including Miss Shannan Paul, Ahmed Khalaf, Will Spottedbear, and Joseph Courtney.

Shieldmaiden Sunday

What: Gaming, Meetup
When: Sunday, August 25, at 12:00 p.m.
Where: Source Comics & Games

Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics & Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. See the calendar for more events!

Circus in the Park 2019 Free Public Show

What: Family, Comedy & Theater
When: Sunday, August 25, at 12:30 p.m.
Where: Powderhorn Park

Free and family-friendly circus arts! See talented performers performing on trapeze, lyra, and other classic circus arts all at Powderhorn Park. There will be no animals or big tent here—just performers under the sky, meaning the event may need to be cancelled if there’s bad weather. Preshow fun begins at 12:30, with the true circus beginning at 2:00 p.m., so grab your seats on the grassy hill.

2DCon Afterparty—Hosted by MNStream

What: Gaming, Community
When: Sunday, August 25, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Uptown VFW

Come and wish a fond farewell to this year’s 2DCon with a night of music, tacos, and gaming pals. This event requires RSVP through Twitch, but per the event page, there are ways around it. There will be free food—tacos and wings on a first come, first served basis—and the Uptown VFW is a full-service bar. Bring your business card if you want to network, and an ID, as this is a 21+ event.
